Today marks the 35th anniversary since Ian Curtis of Joy Division passed away after he took his own life.

Curtis's mental and physical conditions were declining during his final days. He was simultaneously dealing with the mounting pressure of his musical career as the group was about to embark on their first North American tour, divorce, epilepsy, and depression. Although the exact reasons are unknown, it is widely believed that a combination of these factors led him to take his own life at his home in Macclesfield, England. He was only 23 years-old.

While the circumstances surrounding his suicide were tragic, the former lead singer left a legacy that made Joy Division a household name to those who are fans of post-punk. His lyrical style distinguished the band from other groups at the time as he had put an emphasis on emotional expression, which resulted in many of the group's songs to be perceived as dark.

Today, Curtis is remembered by many as one of the most iconic musicians to emerge from that decade.
